Since the consumption of alcohol is socially acceptable, it can
sometimes be difficult to identify and differentiate alcoholism symptoms
from casual or social drinking if it is merely on their breath. Probably
the first hint is when an individual becomes defensive about their
drinking, claiming that it’s only a couple a day, or it’s just to
wind down.
Alcoholism symptoms can vary from person to person, depending on
their physical make-up, tolerance and reaction to alcohol as well as
whether it is everyday use in small amounts, larger amounts or binge
drinking (5 or more drinks) regularly.
As with the use of any drug, one of the best indicators of alcoholism
symptoms is to look at their eyes. A person’s eyes typically will
become red and glassy and they will have difficulty focusing on objects.
Other physical characteristics include slurred speech, lack of balance
and frequent breaks in thoughts and communication.
The many behavioral alcoholism symptoms can include frequent
arguments and confrontational situations or threats, physical and
emotional abuse, lack of responsibility, inability to hold a job and be
productive as well as extreme financial difficulties and stress.
Again, alcoholism symptoms can vary from person to person, but
eventually the alcohol becomes the most important thing in the life of
someone addicted to alcohol and everything else takes a back seat or is
heavily “insulated” by the constant state of inebriation.
